One of the greats in the field of true crime literature, Harold Schechter (Deviant, The Serial Killer Files, Hell’s Princess), teams with five-time Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist Eric Powell (The Goon, Big Man Plans, Hillbilly) to bring you the tale of one of the most notoriously deranged serial killers in American history, Ed Gein.

Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? is an in-depth exploration of the Gein family and what led to the creation of the necrophile who haunted the dreams of 1950s America and inspired such films as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs.

Painstakingly researched and illustrated, Schechter and Powell’s true crime graphic novel takes the Gein story out of the realms of exploitation and gives the reader a fact-based dramatization of these tragic, psychotic and heartbreaking events. Because, in this case, the truth needs no embellishment to be horrifying.

Four years ago, a masked slasher began stalking the streets of New York City.

Maniac Harry is inhuman, unkillable and unstoppable. Which is why the authorities’ solution has been to ignore him, and let New Yorkers adapt to a world where death can strike at any moment. When Maniac Harry starts killing his way through the subway system, trauma-haunted political aide Gina Greene and disgraced NYPD detective Zelda Pettibone become determined to go rogue and destroy him. But how can they fight a monster when they can’t fight City Hall?

From Emmy Award-winning writer Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show, MST3K, Spider-Man & The X-Men) and artist Andrea Mutti (Port of Earth, Hellblazer) comes the horrifying story of what happens when terror becomes the new normal. A frightening, thought-provoking, sometimes funny, always timely tale of murder, obsession and urban living.

Key Selling Points

  • As of this writing, Issue #1 is AfterShock’s fastest to sell out title of 2021
  • Taps into the long-standing, multi-generational appeal of the “slasher” sub-genre of horror films and graphic novels – from Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm Street to Halloween to I Know What You Did Last Summer, even all the way back to Psycho
  • According to the writer, “The original inspiration for the series was my extreme adolescent disappointment with Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, which promised a citywide metropolitan bloodbath and delivered a couple shots of Jason walking through Times Square in a bad mood”
  • Splatters of political satire throughout
  • Writer Elliott Kalan is an Emmy Award-winning writer from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and Mystery Science Theater 3000
  • Series artist and co-creator Andrea Mutti is perhaps best known for his work on DC’s Hellblazer

Genre(s): Comics & Graphic Novels / Nonfiction / Biography & Memoir

A remarkable recounting of a human journey through an inhumane world.

What does it mean to be a “refugee”? It is easy for those who live in relative freedom to ignore or even to villainize people who have been forced to flee their homes. After all, it can be hard to identify with others’ experiences when you haven’t been in their shoes.

In Hakim’s Odyssey, we see firsthand how war can make anyone a refugee. Hakim, a successful young Syrian who had his whole life ahead of him, tells his story: how war forced him to leave everything behind, including his family, his friends, his home, and his business. After the Syrian uprising in 2011, Hakim was arrested and tortured, his town was bombed, his business was seized by the army, and members of his family were arrested or disappeared. This first leg of his odyssey follows Hakim as he travels from Syria to Lebanon, Lebanon to Jordan, and Jordan to Turkey, where he struggles to earn a living and dreams of one day returning to his home.

This graphic novel is necessary reading for our time. Alternately hopeful and heartbreaking, Hakim’s Odyssey is a story about what it means to be human in a world that sometimes fails to be humane.

Key Selling Points

  • A true story about one Syrian refugee’s experiences, as told to the creator.
  • Chronicles Hakim’s story from the 2011 uprising in Syria through his arrival in Turkey.
  • Shows what life is truly like for a refugee from this now decade-long conflict.

About the Creator(s)

Fabien Toulmé is the creator of Ce n’est pas toi que j’attendais and Les Deux Vies de Baudouin. He has published two subsequent volumes in the Hakim’s Odyssey series, translations of which are forthcoming from Graphic Mundi.

Advanced Praise

BOOKLIST (STARRED) — “French graphic creator Toulmé transforms “the words that were entrusted” to him into this stupendous testimony of survival. The first of three volumes (the subsequent two have published in France and are scheduled to be published in the U.S. in 2022) begins with Toulmé’s personal attempt to humanize the horrific immigration statistics, among which “Syrians make up the vast majority of the refugees trying to get to Europe.” A journalist friend led Toulmé to Hakim. Within the first 10 pages, readers know that Hakim has been living in Aix-en-Provence since 2015, but his labyrinthine path from homeland to safety will reveal years of dangerous, challenging displacements. In Syria, Hakim was a gardener managing his own nursery, successful enough to buy his own apartment. By 2011, war destroyed life as he knew it. As chaos ensued, Hakim was imprisoned and tortured without cause, and his younger brother disappeared. Leaving was his only option, taking him through Lebanon, Jordan, then Turkey—desperately searching for ways to help his family back home. Toulmé affectingly uses a palette of blues, purples, and reds for his present-day exchanges with Hakim, then renders the past in browns and blues; his art is invitingly sublime throughout. Chute deftly translates. Volume 1 ends in the midst of another transition, leaving captivated readers only wanting more, more, more.”

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY — Hakim’s story adds to the growing body of graphic literature on the refugee experience, with insightful perspective on how an ordinary life can crumble.

“Thrilling, contemplative, tragic, and inspirational.”
—Peter Dabbene, Foreword Reviews

“A beautiful book. Hakim’s Odyssey is deeply personal and superbly researched. I loved reading it.”
—Benjamin Worku-Dix, author of Vanni: A Family’s Struggle Through the Sri Lankan Conflict

Choosing between living the life you want and living the life you’re “supposed to have” is not always an easy choice. Noah, embracing his true-self, wants to pursue a career in costume design, something his loving, public service parents would never approve of. Azarie, the perfect, model daughter of a very stern, traditional family, dreams of embracing the hobbies she secretly loves, hobbies her social circle would never abide by.

The two live different lives and their social statuses keep them from ever crossing paths until they have a chance encounter that exposes some common ground: the desire to be who they truly are. Together, the two set out to put it all on the line and show everyone what they’re made of and what they want to achieve in the form of cosplay. Their growing friendship will be tested and their faith in themselves, as well as each other, will be tried.

Up-and-coming writer David Pinckney (Fight Like a Girl) and first-time graphic novel artist Ennun Ana Iurov introduce a coming-of-age yarn about self-discovery, resilience, and the enduring power of having a person believe in you.

Key Selling Points

  • An empowering and uplifting story about friendship blossoming under unlikely circumstances
  • Ennun Ana Iurov is a very well known artist making her graphic novel debut
  • Creativity flourishes through amazing cosplay and more fashion montages than a 1980s rom-com
  • Real characters with relatable struggles

About the Creator(s)

DAVID PINCKNEY is a comic book writer and screenwriter. Having written his own creator-owned comics like Fight Like A Girl published by Action Lab Entertainment and Forged: Legendary Crafts and Delivery Services coming later this year as a self-published webcomic, he has developed a passion for creating new characters and worlds. In addition to his own comics, Pinckney has written for Princeless (created by Jeremy Whitely), Time Samplers, and others.

ENNUN ANA IUROV is an illustrator currently based in Romania. She enjoys drawing people and characters, fashion and complex images! Details, hands and eyes are a constant interest, as well as muted and interesting color combinations.

Advanced Praise

BOOKLIST — Noah loves sewing and design, and he’s not afraid to let everyone know. His parents don’t take him seriously, though, and insist he apply to UCLA instead of the art school he wants to attend. Azarie loves comics and cosplay and doesn’t want anyone to know, especially her father, who is running for reelection. He has forbidden her to do anything that might embarrass him, including having friends “from the wrong zip code.” After meeting by chance, Noah and Azarie team up to create a cosplay costume for Azarie to wear at a local comic con-assuming Azarie can summon the courage to defy her father and break away from the “friends” he approves of. The friendship between Noah, Azarie, and the group of like-minded artists they befriend is charming. The art is lively and expressive, with even the chapter headings being used to add depth to the story. A bright, encouraging story about the resilience of friendship and learning to stand up for one’s self.

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL — Gr 8 Up-A sewist and an aspiring actress team up to compete at a con. Noah, a high school senior, longs to go to art school after graduating so his peers, who ridicule him for his talents, will appreciate his handmade garments. Best friend Hiroki is mostly supportive but more interested in ending the school year on a high note by going to parties. They attend a few, but nothing is more life-changing than when Noah runs into Azarie, the mayor’s picture-perfect daughter, at a mall in Santa Monica nerding out about comics and video games. With her reputation at stake, Azarie asks Noah to keep her double life a secret. But her dreams of cosplaying and Noah’s need for a costume for his design portfolio link the pair even more closely as they dare to realize their ambitions. Soon, everybody takes notice-and not everyone approves. Combining humor and teenage drama, Pinckney’s (Fight Like a Girl) latest is among the first in Mad Cave Studios’ new Maverick imprint. Romanian artist Iurov’s heavy lines and muted pastels add a unique flair to this relatable story of finding one’s path despite parental expectations. The beautiful, wordless sequences depicting Noah and Azarie as they create are mesmerizingly meditative. Though characters’ ethnicity is not explicitly mentioned, the art and contextual clues suggest that Noah is Afro-Latinx, Hiroki is Japanese, and Azarie is white. Supporting characters are diverse in skin tone. VERDICT A fashionable, well-stitched tale. Recommended for all teen graphic novel collections.-Alec Chunn, Eugene P.L., OR

KIRKUS — Two young artists seize a chance to showcase their talents in the hopes of pursuing their dreams. High school senior Noah sews and dreams of designing costumes. Already notorious among peers for making his own clothes and costumes for parties, Noah wants to go to art school and perfect his craft, but his parents are opposed. Despite their objections, Noah applies to his dream school along with their approved, traditional universities. One day he bumps into Azarie, a classmate who is the popular lead cheerleader. She secretly nurtures a love of comic books and aspires to be an actress, to the dismay of her strict, status-conscious parents and friends. Azarie ends up proposing that the two of them collaborate to create a cosplay costume she can wear in a contest, thus showing others who they truly are. While working together, they find a wider community of artists, and a friendship grows-but so does others’ animosity toward their bond. The storyline offers a sweet, albeit familiar, narrative. The protagonists’ main conflict-the disapproval of their parents-reads as a not-very-subtle plot device that would have benefited from more development. However, the illustrations bring life to the graphic novel, particularly when it comes to the characters’ sartorial creativity, demonstrating the range of Noah’s talent. Noah is Black; Azarie is White, and background characters are ethnically diverse. A charming effort with a positive message about being true to oneself. (Graphic fiction. 12-16)

JOHN LEGUIZAMO TEAMS UP WITH TODD MCFARLANE TO LAUNCH THE NEW SUPERHERO COMIC ‘PHENOMX’

PORTLAND, Ore. 08/25/2021 — The highly anticipated creation, PhenomX is launching this November from acclaimed actor, John Leguizamo. The first issue is an extra-length comic featuring cover art by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.

McFarlane and Leguizamo first met on the set of the 1997 Spawn movie, where Leguizamo delivered a memorable performance as Spawn’s arch-enemy, The Clown. In 2018, the two creators re-connected at New York Comic Con and made the decision to put their heads together.

PhenomX centers around the character, Max Gomez, who was wrongfully imprisoned and is desperate to regain his freedom. Max agrees to become a subject in an underground government experiment.

When the trial gives him phenomenal shape-shifting abilities, Gomez learns his new “freedom” requires surviving a superpowered war fought on the streets of NYC.

Fans have been anticipating Leguizamo’s Latin superhero since a crowdfunding campaign was announced in 2019 for his creator-owned project PhenomX. The all-Latino creative team launching Leguizamo’s new hero includes artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez—author of the comic series La Boriqueña—as well as interior art by Chris Batista, Sabrina Cintron, and Christopher Sotomayor and cover art by Jim Muñiz, José Marzán, Jr., and Juan Fernández.

“In today’s world, it’s incredibly important to support Latin artists,” said Leguizamo. “There is a lack of Latin representation in Hollywood, and it’s important to showcase Latin superheroes.”

“John has been a multitalented artist for such a long time it was exciting to hear that he wanted to bring some of those talents into our comic industry and to help give a voice to a certain segment of society,” said McFarlane. “John is well regarded in the Latino entertainment world and we are both hoping that his character not only makes an impact here but across the globe, regardless of your background. Cool comic books should have a place everywhere.”
