WATCH IT NOW! Queer Peers: Representation in Comics

Diamond Book Distributors partnered with Booklist to bring you a special Pride Month Webinar – Queer Peers: Representation in Comics.

Vincent (Vincey) Zalkind interviewed Steve Orlando, Sina Grace, Hazel Newlevant, & Lela Gwen about their works & the importance of representation in the medium.

VINCENT (Vincey) ZALKIND is a library worker in California. As a huge comic book fan he can usually be found advocating for comics and graphic novels as literacy, promoting LGBTQIA comics in the library, organizing his ever growing record collection, baking, or hanging out with his cat and partner.

STEVE ORLANDO‘s first book ever was poorly drawn in fifth-grade classroom pencils on Xerox paper, and featured a doughboy with superpowers, and names changed from trademark purposes. He was a precocious child. Today he writes and produces comics, including Virgil, Crude and stories in the Eisner Award Nominated Outlaw Territory at Image Comics. He launched Midnighter and took part in Batman and Robin Eternal and CMYK: Yellow at DC Entertainment. Find him at your convenience deep down the rabbit hole of discussing wine, spirits, or mythology.

SINA GRACE has worn many hats in his many years in comics but is mainly known for his work as a writer, artist, and general gal about town.

HAZEL NEWLEVANT is a Portland-raised, Queens-residing cartoonist. Their comics include If This Be Sin, Tender-Hearted, Sugar Town, and No Ivy League. They edited and published the anthologies Chainmail Bikini and Comics For Choice. They co-edited the anthology Puerto Rico Strong, published by Lion Forge Comics, which received an Eisner Award. Their comics have been honored with the Ignatz Award, Xeric Grant and the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant. They have worked as an Associate Editor at Lion Forge Comics, and are currently the social media manager of A Wave Blue World. They like to dance around, alone or with others.

LELA GWEN is a writer that has written Hellraiser Bestiary 4 (BOOM!), Where We Live (Image), All We Ever Wanted (Wave Blue World), Bad Luck Chuck (Dark Horse), as well as upcoming graphic novel Nightmare in Savannah (Mad Cave Studios). She’s a proud social justice warrior, and the town weirdo in her rural community. She’s currently in school despite being way too old, but she loves it.

Diamond Talks with Stephanie Phillips About NUCLEAR FAMILY

Stephanie Phillips joined Diamond Book Distributors during the Publisher Weekly US Book Show to discuss her upcoming dystopian graphic novel from AfterShock Comics, NUCLEAR FAMILY.

NUCLEAR FAMILY takes place in America in 1957. Elvis dominates the airwaves and apple pie is served after every meal. But, with the dark cloud of nuclear holocaust looming, Korean War vet Tim McClean’s major concern is taking care of his family in the atomic age.

When the first bomb does drop on an unexpecting Midwest city, Tim and his family find themselves plunged into a strange new world, where what’s left of the United States has gone underground while continuing to wage war on Russia with unthinkable tactics.

Stephanie Phillips is an American writer known for comics and graphic novels such as HARLEY QUINN, BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, SENSATIONAL WONDER WOMAN, SUPERMAN, TAARNA, and THE BUTCHER OF PARIS. Her stories and comics have appeared with DC Comics, AfterShock Comics, Dark Horse, Oni Press, Top Cow/Image Comics, Heavy Metal, Black Mask Studios, A Wave Blue World, and more. Stephanie is currently the writer for the ongoing Harley Quinn series at DC Comics with artist Riley Rossmo.

Stephanie also holds a PhD in rhetoric and composition and and MA in English from the University of South Florida. She has taught writing and communication courses at the University at Buffalo, the University of South Florida, and the University of Tampa.

Outside of comics, Stephanie is a Muay Thai fighter and hockey player. She likes cats, old Westerns, and macaroni & cheese shaped like cartoons.

Steve Ditko Stands Revealed in Hermes Press’ Biography

Hermes Press Publisher Dan Herman presents Ditko Shrugged

The first in depth biography of comics legend Steve Ditko, in his own words, is now available in Hermes Press’ Eisner Award-nominated Ditko Shrugged: The Uncompromising Life of the Artist Behind Spider-Man.

Taken from years of correspondence with author David Currie and endorsed by the Ditko family, and including a foreword by Mark S. Ditko, the book examines the last of a generation of American comic book artists who created powerful modern-day mythology and became among the most influential and original creators of the 20th century. He co-created Spider-Man along with Stan Lee, but walked away from the character in the 1960s just as it was gaining popularity. He died alone at 90, known to the comic book industry as a “cranky recluse.”

Through Ditko’s history, the stories of other artists from the same period are examined, from Jack Kirby to Wallace Wood, and how they all fell afoul of a system stacked against them.

In his foreword, Mark S. Ditko writes: “I’m very happy to say that this is a really great book. David, and his correspondence with my uncle and others, uncovered and documented things that would otherwise have been left unknown or subject to complete speculation …if ever even considered. Note that my role in the review of this book was mainly about my uncle’s personal life as we know it and not necessarily his professional career. But David clearly has a good grasp on that aspect of him.”

Frank Forte and Jason Paulos Talk EEEK!

JASON PAULOS exploded onto the Australian comics scene in 1989 with the first self published issue of ‘Hairbutt The Hippo’, the story of a hard boiled anthropomorphic private eye roaming the seedy underbelly of a future city. Over the years Jason has regularly contributed to Australian MAD magazine (over 100 pages of Hairbutt strips), DC comics (5 page Green Lantern story for Bizarro Comics book 2), Judge Dredd Megazine (wrote and drew 16 page horror story called ‘Easy Prey’) and published a dozen Hairbutt comics. He also drew for the Australian MAD Magazine.

Asylum publisher Frank Forte and Jason Paulos catch up on publishing EEEK! Read the full interview below.

EEEK! is available through Diamond Book Distributors and all book wholesalers.

Book Solicitation:

This retro-style anthology of all-new horror tales is guaranteed to give you the eeries and the creepies! Taking a pinch of black humour from EC comics and mixing it with the art stylings of House of Mystery and Warren comics, EEEK! blends a heady broth that hits you like a burning incense stick to the retina. Jason Paulos delivers the goods with over 15 tales of revenge, zombies, vampires, ghouls and monsters. Each tale drawn in a different style reminiscent of the B&W horror mags of the 70’s and 80’s. In ‘Deadline of Death’ we witness rival comic artists dabbling with malevolent forces that arrive in the form of a chain smoking goatee wearing Satan. In Lights! Camera! Murder!, A lovesick starlet and a ruthless film director embark on a doomed love affair that ends in pieces! In “Easy Prey” A helpless girl, lost in the wilderness … but is she all that she seems? In “Head Trip” a hippie’s love for music goes horribly wrong. A must for fans of horror comics!

For those who aren’t familiar, can you tell us what readers can expect from EEEK?

JASON PAULOS: 5 to 8 page black and white horror tales in the style of ‘Joe Orlando era’ House of Mystery.

FRANK FORTE: When I saw the single issues of EEEK! I thought they’d make a great collection.  I’m a huge fan of vintage horror comics and Jason captured the 70s and 80s era of movement better than anyone.

How did this project come about? What inspired this graphic novel?

JP: The comics of my childhood.

What was the process for creating a horror anthology like this?

JP: The first batch of stories were created at work at my boring office job, literally winging it with nothing but a splash page and a catchy title.

FF: I thought EEEK! Was a great title for the comic and TPB. There have been many titles, tributes and copycats over the years, Eerie, Creepy, Haunts, Haunted Horror, The Creeps, Web Of Horror…but there’s only one EEEK!

In terms of audience, who is EEEK for?

JP: Anybody with a soft spot for old school horror comics anthologies and the comics artists of the 1970’s.

FF: yeah, we’re targeting fans of the old Eerie and Creepy collections, but a lot of the stories really have the vive of the DC Horror comics; House of Mystery, House of Secrets and Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion. So we hope to grab those fans. But there’s also a new generation of horror readers that maybe have already seen and read the old comics and reprints, and now want something new. This book is for them.

What are you hoping readers will take away from this title?

JP: A renewed sense of how comics are supposed to fun and not to be taken too seriously.

FF: We hope readers can have a good time delving into some creepy terrorific comics made to chill and eeek you. These tales have some great characters and unseen twisted ending that are both shocking and entertaining. The collection has some amazing art, all of which is done by Jason Paulos who has the amazing ability to change styles, so the art look a little different from story to story.  This gives the book the look and feel of an anthology collection drawn by a variety of artists, but it’s all Jason. EEEK! has a lighthearted razor’s edge but still reveals it’s horror roots as it cuts to the bone.

Graphic Mundi Inks Exclusive Distribution Deal with Diamond

(Hunt Valley, MD) — (June 3, 2020) — Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of English-language comic books, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise, is pleased to announce that it has signed a distribution agreement with Penn State University Press to be the exclusive distributor of their Graphic Mundi imprint to comic book specialty markets in North America. Diamond was also awarded the rights to exclusively distribute Graphic Mundi titles to the North American book market under the banner of Diamond Book Distributors.

Graphic Mundi publishes nonfiction and fiction graphic narratives for adults and young adults on topics such as health and human rights, politics, the environments, and science and technology, created by people from diverse backgrounds. An imprint of Penn State University Press, Graphic Mundi expands on the list of critically acclaimed graphic novels published in the Press’s Graphic Medicine series, which launched in 2015 with the Eisner Award–nominated Graphic Medicine Manifesto.

“This is an absolutely terrific step forward for the Graphic Mundi imprint,” says Brendan Coyne, sales and marketing director at PSU Press. “Diamond is synonymous with comics, and the team there has been warm, welcoming, and collaborative—not to mention utterly expert and professional. We’re looking forward to a long, fruitful partnership that will secure firm footing and excellent exposure for the people who create our graphic novels.”

“I’m very happy to welcome Graphic Mundi to the Diamond Book Distributors roster,” said Josh Hayes, Executive Vice President of Diamond Book Distributors. “It’s exciting to partner with a publisher so passionate and dedicated to bringing comic stories to people and to the page – from all voices and all points of view.  I can’t wait to get started working with these books.”

Graphic Mundi launched in Spring 2021 with COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology, edited by Kendra Boileau, publisher of the imprint, and Rich Johnson, founder of Brick Road Media, LLC. The collection contains more than sixty short comics from a diverse set of creators, including indie powerhouses, mainstream artists, and Ignatz and Eisner Award winners. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) to support the employees of bookstores and comic shops and brick-and-mortar stores affected by the pandemic. Forthcoming titles from the imprint include an English translation of Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey, the first volume of Fabien Toulme’s award-winning nonfiction trilogy about a successful young Syrian forced to upend his life and become a refugee, and A Chance by Cristina Durán and Miguel Giner Bou, which chronicles the creators’ struggles and triumphs as they build a family in the face of tremendous odds.

“We are excited to begin a partnership with Graphic Mundi and see great market potential in their diverse line of books,” said Geppi Family Enterprises’ Chief Purchasing Officer, Tim Lenaghan. “Their effort to provide top-quality products that are both topical and relatable is an asset we value. We’re greatly looking forward to working with them to promote and sell their line of books.”

Everyone Thought Pryor Brice Was a Joke.
WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?

Sometimes you kill. Sometimes you get killed. But no matter what, everyone dies the first time they go on stage.

Pryor Brice has always wanted to be funny. And now, he’s taken the plunge and started doing stand-up comedy. Unfortunately, his older sister – Ronan – wants her brother to stop daydreaming and focus on his future.

Pryor is determined to succeed…the only problem is: He totally sucks at stand-up. That is…until an accident changes everything, leading both Pryor and Ronan to discover comedy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

KNOCK ‘EM DEAD is a supernatural horror about comedy, brought to you by writer Eliot Rahal (MIDNIGHT VISTA, HOT LUNCH SPECIAL) and artist Mattia Monaco.

Key Selling Points

  • Writer Eliot Rahal’s original works are based on things that actually happened to him – and, like the stories in HOT LUNCH SPECIAL and MIDNIGHT VISTA, KNOCK ‘EM DEAD is based on Eliot’s early experiences as a stand-up and writer
  • Rahal has described the series as “King of Comedy meets The Frighteners.”
  • Newcomer artist Mattia Monaco is another breakout discovery by AfterShock.
  • Story is set in Chicago, the home of up and coming comedy in the U.S.
  • Stand-up comedy is an art form that continues to fascinate the public. As researchers into the art have put it, “stand-up comedy fulfills a need for feelings of truth, trust, empathy and intimacy between people – important in a society where many often complain about feeling isolated.” It is against this backdrop that the supernatural and crime aspects of KNOCK ‘EM DEAD are set.

ANDY’s parents rescued ROCKET when Andy was just a toddler, and they grew up together, with Rocket serving as Andy’s guardian through every one of childhood’s ups and downs. So when Rocket passes away right before Andy’s 14th birthday, he’s rudderless. High school is coming soon and he can’t imagine making that transition without Rocket at his side. The day before school starts, when Andy is at his lowest, he visits Rocket’s grave, and unexpectedly summons the RAINBOW BRIDGE, a gateway to a fantasy world where pets discover their afterlife.

One part heaven and one part limbo, this is a final resting place for pets – but also a realm where any unfinished business must be completed, before restless pet souls twist into bizarre, seemingly malevolent wraiths that haunt the periphery of this otherwise splendid paradise. It’s extremely rare for a human to visit this realm, but Rocket and Andy find each other again in this wondrous pet Valhalla to go on one last epic adventure to help Rocket reunite with his lost littermate, fulfilling Rocket’s last wishes. Here, the roles are reversed, as Andy has to be the strong one and support Rocket in his quest for closure. By adventure’s end, Andy finally gains the confidence to let go of his childhood and enter the next phase of his life, starting his first day of high school.

RAINBOW BRIDGE is aimed primarily at younger readers, on the border of middle grade and YA, but should resonate with anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a beloved pet – or anyone who greeted growing up with nervousness and anxiety. Like JOE THE BARBARIAN before it, RAINBOW BRIDGE can address the lines between reality and fantasy (although everything in the book is portrayed as actually happening), wish fulfillment and personal growth, childhood and young adulthood. There are also themes of overcoming trauma, and of compassion for animals. The Realm Beyond the Rainbow Bridge is shaped by its inhabitants, and contains vast fantasy vistas inspired by the adventures pets and their owners, especially kids, imagine for themselves.

One of the greats in the field of true crime literature, Harold Schechter (Deviant, The Serial Killer Files, Hell’s Princess), teams with five-time Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist Eric Powell (The Goon, Big Man Plans, Hillbilly) to bring you the tale of one of the most notoriously deranged serial killers in American history, Ed Gein.

Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? is an in-depth exploration of the Gein family and what led to the creation of the necrophile who haunted the dreams of 1950s America and inspired such films as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs.

Painstakingly researched and illustrated, Schechter and Powell’s true crime graphic novel takes the Gein story out of the realms of exploitation and gives the reader a fact-based dramatization of these tragic, psychotic and heartbreaking events. Because, in this case, the truth needs no embellishment to be horrifying.
