SLJTeen Live 2021

Diamond participated in the annual SLJTeen Live on August 5, 2021.

With hope on the horizon of an unprecedented, traumatic year, educators, librarians, and students are wondering: Where do we go from here?

So much of adolescence is preparing for the future—college, careers, adulthood, the next grade—and that’s even tougher when no one knows what the future will look like. As we adjust to a new normal, we must move forward while remembering where we’ve come from. After a pandemic and amid continued tragedies of racist violence, teens and adults alike are called to heal and grow, to learn more, and to further conversations about history and justice. Through it all, books reflect and illuminate our lives, telling boundary-pushing stories that take publishing to the next level. As teens consider what comes after childhood, we all must think about what the future holds for students and storytelling.

WATCH IT NOW! Queer Peers: Representation in Comics

Diamond Book Distributors partnered with Booklist to bring you a special Pride Month Webinar – Queer Peers: Representation in Comics.

Vincent (Vincey) Zalkind interviewed Steve Orlando, Sina Grace, Hazel Newlevant, & Lela Gwen about their works & the importance of representation in the medium.

VINCENT (Vincey) ZALKIND is a library worker in California. As a huge comic book fan he can usually be found advocating for comics and graphic novels as literacy, promoting LGBTQIA comics in the library, organizing his ever growing record collection, baking, or hanging out with his cat and partner.

STEVE ORLANDO‘s first book ever was poorly drawn in fifth-grade classroom pencils on Xerox paper, and featured a doughboy with superpowers, and names changed from trademark purposes. He was a precocious child. Today he writes and produces comics, including Virgil, Crude and stories in the Eisner Award Nominated Outlaw Territory at Image Comics. He launched Midnighter and took part in Batman and Robin Eternal and CMYK: Yellow at DC Entertainment. Find him at your convenience deep down the rabbit hole of discussing wine, spirits, or mythology.

SINA GRACE has worn many hats in his many years in comics but is mainly known for his work as a writer, artist, and general gal about town.

HAZEL NEWLEVANT is a Portland-raised, Queens-residing cartoonist. Their comics include If This Be Sin, Tender-Hearted, Sugar Town, and No Ivy League. They edited and published the anthologies Chainmail Bikini and Comics For Choice. They co-edited the anthology Puerto Rico Strong, published by Lion Forge Comics, which received an Eisner Award. Their comics have been honored with the Ignatz Award, Xeric Grant and the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant. They have worked as an Associate Editor at Lion Forge Comics, and are currently the social media manager of A Wave Blue World. They like to dance around, alone or with others.

LELA GWEN is a writer that has written Hellraiser Bestiary 4 (BOOM!), Where We Live (Image), All We Ever Wanted (Wave Blue World), Bad Luck Chuck (Dark Horse), as well as upcoming graphic novel Nightmare in Savannah (Mad Cave Studios). She’s a proud social justice warrior, and the town weirdo in her rural community. She’s currently in school despite being way too old, but she loves it.

Graphic Mundi Inks Exclusive Distribution Deal with Diamond

(Hunt Valley, MD) — (June 3, 2020) — Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of English-language comic books, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise, is pleased to announce that it has signed a distribution agreement with Penn State University Press to be the exclusive distributor of their Graphic Mundi imprint to comic book specialty markets in North America. Diamond was also awarded the rights to exclusively distribute Graphic Mundi titles to the North American book market under the banner of Diamond Book Distributors.

Graphic Mundi publishes nonfiction and fiction graphic narratives for adults and young adults on topics such as health and human rights, politics, the environments, and science and technology, created by people from diverse backgrounds. An imprint of Penn State University Press, Graphic Mundi expands on the list of critically acclaimed graphic novels published in the Press’s Graphic Medicine series, which launched in 2015 with the Eisner Award–nominated Graphic Medicine Manifesto.

“This is an absolutely terrific step forward for the Graphic Mundi imprint,” says Brendan Coyne, sales and marketing director at PSU Press. “Diamond is synonymous with comics, and the team there has been warm, welcoming, and collaborative—not to mention utterly expert and professional. We’re looking forward to a long, fruitful partnership that will secure firm footing and excellent exposure for the people who create our graphic novels.”

“I’m very happy to welcome Graphic Mundi to the Diamond Book Distributors roster,” said Josh Hayes, Executive Vice President of Diamond Book Distributors. “It’s exciting to partner with a publisher so passionate and dedicated to bringing comic stories to people and to the page – from all voices and all points of view.  I can’t wait to get started working with these books.”

Graphic Mundi launched in Spring 2021 with COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology, edited by Kendra Boileau, publisher of the imprint, and Rich Johnson, founder of Brick Road Media, LLC. The collection contains more than sixty short comics from a diverse set of creators, including indie powerhouses, mainstream artists, and Ignatz and Eisner Award winners. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) to support the employees of bookstores and comic shops and brick-and-mortar stores affected by the pandemic. Forthcoming titles from the imprint include an English translation of Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey, the first volume of Fabien Toulme’s award-winning nonfiction trilogy about a successful young Syrian forced to upend his life and become a refugee, and A Chance by Cristina Durán and Miguel Giner Bou, which chronicles the creators’ struggles and triumphs as they build a family in the face of tremendous odds.

“We are excited to begin a partnership with Graphic Mundi and see great market potential in their diverse line of books,” said Geppi Family Enterprises’ Chief Purchasing Officer, Tim Lenaghan. “Their effort to provide top-quality products that are both topical and relatable is an asset we value. We’re greatly looking forward to working with them to promote and sell their line of books.”

NUCLEAR FAMILY • 9781949028737

America, 1957. Elvis dominates the airwaves and apple pie is served after every meal. But, with the dark cloud of nuclear holocaust looming, Korean War vet Tim McClean’s major concern is taking care of his family in the atomic age.

When the first bomb does drop on an unexpecting Midwest city, Tim and his family find themselves plunged into a strange new world, where what’s left of the United States has gone underground while continuing to wage war on Russia with unthinkable tactics.

Based on Philip K. Dick’s short story “Breakfast at Twilight,” NUCLEAR FAMILY is written by Stephanie Phillips (Butcher of Paris, Heavy Metal, ARTEMIS AND THE ASSASSIN, RED ATLANTIS) and illustrated by Tony Shasteen (Star Trek). It’s Cold War era science fiction at its most timely and terrifying.

MAY 25 at 2:30PM EST

Launched in 2002, Albatross Exploding Funnybooks has always been a labor of love for award-winning, Nashville-based cartoonist ERIC POWELL. The label began as a means to publish Powell’s creator-owned series The Goon, which mainstream publishers had deemed “too different.” Although The Goon later found a home and wider audience with Dark Horse Comics, Powell continued to publish, celebrate, and cultivate creator-owned titles through Albatross Exploding Funnybooks, including his all-ages comic Chimichanga and Rebecca Sugar’s Pug Davis. In 2016, Powell rededicated himself in earnest to his publishing company, launching his new fantasy series Hillbilly and other works such as the all-ages horror anthology Spook House, Fabian Rangel Jr. and Logan Faerber’s weird war tale ’Namwolf, and Brendon Small’s Galaktikon.

HAROLD SCHECHTER (born June 28, 1948) is an American true crime writer who specializes in serial killers. He is a Professor Emeritus at Queens College, City University of New York where he taught classes in American literature and myth criticism for forty-two years. Schechter’s essays have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, and the International Herald Tribune. He is the editor of the Library of America volume, True Crime: An American Anthology. His newest book, published in March 2021, is Maniac: The Bath School Disaster and the Birth of the Modern Mass Killer.

DID YOU HEAR WHAT EDDIE GEIN DONE? • 9781949889048

One of the greats in the field of true crime literature, Harold Schechter (Deviant, The Serial Killer Files, Hell’s Princess), teams with five-time Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist Eric Powell (The Goon, Big Man Plans, Hillbilly) to bring you the tale of one of the most notoriously deranged serial killers in American history, Ed Gein.

Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? is an in-depth exploration of the Gein family and what led to the creation of the necrophile who haunted the dreams of 1950s America and inspired such films as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs.

Painstakingly researched and illustrated, Schechter and Powell’s true crime graphic novel takes the Gein story out of the realms of exploitation and gives the reader a fact-based dramatization of these tragic, psychotic and heartbreaking events. Because, in this case, the truth needs no embellishment to be horrifying.
